Assam Rifles recover 2,60,000 Yaba tablets worth Rs.52 cr in Khayerpur, Tripura

In a significant drug bust, the Assam Rifles seized a substantial quantity of drugs valued at over Rs.52 crore during an operation in West Tripura on Thursday. Acting on confidential information, the paramilitary forces intercepted a mini-truck at Khayerpur and recovered approximately 260,000 Yaba (Methamphetamine) tablets.

While the Assam Rifles successfully confiscated the vehicle, the driver managed to flee the scene. The seized drugs have been handed over to the Customs Department in Agartala for further legal action.

An official statement from the Assam Rifles highlighted that this operation aligns with the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ initiative championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as the ongoing anti-drug campaign led by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha. The statement emphasized the force’s steadfast commitment to combating drug trafficking and illegal smuggling in the northeastern region.

A police official noted that the mini-truck, carrying the drugs, originated from neighboring Mizoram, which shares a 510 km unfenced border with Myanmar. This border has become a crucial route for smuggling, with drugs often transported from Myanmar into southern Assam before being distributed throughout India and beyond. Tripura, with its extensive 856 km international border with Bangladesh, has increasingly emerged as a key corridor for drug smuggling.

Methamphetamine, commonly referred to as Yaba or “party tablets,” is highly addictive and is a favorite among drug users. The recent seizure underscores the ongoing challenges posed by drug trafficking in the region and the collaborative efforts of law enforcement to address this pressing issue.
