Samsung warns employees of job risks amid strike protests
Tamil Nadu Police detained 609 employees of Samsung Electronics and trade union members on Tuesday for organizing a street protest at the company’s home appliances plant in Sriperumbudur, Chennai. The demonstration followed a September 9 strike involving around 1,000 workers demanding higher wages and official recognition of their trade union.
Police officials reported that the detained workers, along with leaders from the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), were arrested for causing public inconvenience. The detained individuals were held in four wedding halls.
CITU, leading the strike, is advocating for a minimum monthly salary of Rs.36,000, up from the current Rs.25,000. This strike is considered one of the largest labor actions in India in recent times.
Samsung has warned that employees participating in the strike may risk their jobs, stating that wages at the Sriperumbudur plant are already more than double those offered by other companies in the region.
Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has reached out to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, urging a swift resolution to the ongoing strike and calling for state intervention to maintain a positive environment in the manufacturing sector.
