India to get 6 more nuclear power plants from Russia; Putin & Modi Visit Moscow’s Atom Centre

Amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s crucial visit to Russia, both countries are discussing the construction of six more high-power nuclear power plant units as well as low-power nuclear plants.

According to Reuters, Russian state nuclear energy company ROSATOM said on Tuesday it was discussing the possibility of building six more nuclear power units in India.

PM Modi who is on a two-day visit to Moscow, is scheduled to hold official talks in the Kremlin later on Tuesday focusing on cheaper energy supplies and deeper economic and strategic ties.

ROSATOM further informed that Russia and India are in dialogue about jointly developing the transit potential of the Northern Sea Route. The two nations are discussing the possibility of supplying Russian energy resources via the Northern Sea Route to Indian ports, with trans-shipment at Russian Far Eastern ports. They are also exploring options for establishing a pilot line for international container transit through the Northern Sea Route.

The increasing favorability of nuclear power as a low-carbon energy option has led uranium prices to surge more than threefold since late 2020.

Bloomberg Intelligence suggests that the market may stay constrained until 2029 as utilities continue to rebuild their supplies. Additionally, cooperation in the civilian nuclear sector is exempt from US sanctions against Russia for its actions in Ukraine.

ROSATOM had previously supplied nuclear fuel to Kudankulam in 2022 and 2023. Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant units 1 and 2 have already become operational, and the work is progressing on units 3 and 6.
