NCB Mumbai cracks down on major drug network

The Mumbai unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has successfully dismantled a major drug trafficking syndicate with international connections. Authorities seized multiple narcotics worth Rs.200 crore in the grey market, including 11.54 kilograms of high-grade cocaine. Additionally, four individuals suspected to be part of the network have been arrested.

Union Home Minister applauds NCB’s success

Union Home Minister Amit Shah acknowledged the Mumbai NCB unit’s achievements. He praised the operation in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:

A breakthrough in Mumbai in seizing very high-grade cocaine, ganja, and cannabis gummies, and arresting four people. It is a testament to the success of the top-to-bottom approach to investigation adopted to make PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision for a drug-free India a reality. Congratulations to team Narcotics Bureau on this massive success.

Details of the seizure

The NCB team confiscated:

  • 11.54 kg of cocaine
  • 4.9 kg of hydroponic weed
  • 200 packets of cannabis gummies (weighing approximately 5.5 kg)

Authorities revealed that the syndicate procured the seized drugs illegally from the United States (USA).

NCB raid in Navi Mumbai leads to breakthrough

On January 31, NCB officials raided a hideout in Navi Mumbai following intelligence inputs. The operation began after authorities intercepted a parcel containing 200 grams of cocaine from a courier agency, which was intended for delivery to Australia.

NCB’s Mumbai zonal unit was able to backtrack the supply to the bulk quantity, which was concealed at a location in Navi Mumbai,” said an NCB official.

International drug network with strict secrecy

Preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate was operated by Indian suspects based abroad. The group employed courier services, small cargo, and human carriers to smuggle drugs within India and internationally.

The syndicate used coded language and pseudo names for conversations to evade detection. NCB sources disclosed that the members were strangers to each other, operating on a strict need-to-know basis to avoid exposure.

Further investigations underway

Authorities are continuing their investigation to track down other members of the syndicate and establish backward and forward linkages in the drug trade.

The successful operation was led by Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Amit Ghawate, Additional Director of the Mumbai Zonal Unit, NCB.
