Governor voids upcoming Assembly session

Hours after N Biren Singh stepped down as the Chief Minister of Manipur, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla declared the upcoming session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly as “null and void” with immediate effect. The announcement was made through an official notice issued by Assembly Secretary K Meghajit Singh on Sunday.

According to the notice, the Governor exercised powers under Article 174(1) of the Indian Constitution to revoke the earlier directive summoning the 7th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, stating that the session, which had yet to commence, stood canceled immediately.

Political reactions to N Biren Singh’s resignation

Following Singh’s resignation, Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, accused the BJP of prioritizing political survival over addressing Manipur’s prolonged crisis. He alleged that Home Minister Amit Shah intervened after realizing that the BJP would lose the no-confidence motion. Gogoi further criticized the BJP, stating that the party lacks a roadmap to restore peace and normalcy in the violence-hit state.

On the other hand, Manipur PWD Minister Govindas Konthoujam downplayed the opposition’s move to bring a no-confidence motion. He noted that while opposition parties have the right to move such a motion, they only have five MLAs in the assembly. He also acknowledged internal differences among ruling party MLAs but maintained that they remain united.

N Biren Singh’s resignation amid ongoing ethnic violence

N Biren Singh resigned from the Chief Minister’s post on Sunday, citing the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur that has persisted for over two years. Singh submitted his resignation letter to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan in Imphal.

Singh was accompanied by 14 MLAs from the BJP and Naga People’s Front (NPF), along with Manipur BJP President and senior leader Sambit Patra.

New Chief Minister to be announced soon

As per sources, the BJP is expected to announce a new Chief Minister soon, ahead of the next Assembly session.

Singh’s farewell message

In his resignation letter, Singh expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Manipur. He thanked the Central government for its interventions, developmental initiatives, and projects aimed at safeguarding the interests of every Manipuri.

With the political landscape in Manipur set for a leadership transition, all eyes are now on the BJP’s next move to stabilize the state.
