Another case like Atul Subhash: Delhi Cafe owner commits suicide

In a tragic incident reminiscent of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash’s case, Puneet Khurana, co-founder of a popular cafe in Delhi, was found dead at his residence in Model Town’s Kalyan Vihar area on Tuesday evening. Police suspect the 34-year-old died by suicide.

Ongoing divorce, business dispute

Khurana and his wife, Manika Jagdish Pahwa, were in the midst of divorce proceedings. The couple, co-owners of Woodbox Cafe, were reportedly entangled in a bitter dispute over the business.

According to Khurana’s family, he had been “upset” with his wife, and a 16-minute audio recording revealed a heated argument between the two over financial matters. In the recording, Pahwa is heard saying, “We are getting a divorce, but I am still a business partner…you need to clear my dues.”

Investigation underway

Police have recovered Khurana’s phone and called his wife in for questioning as part of their ongoing investigation. The couple had been married since 2016.

Parallels to Bengaluru’s Atul Subhash case

The case has drawn comparisons to the December suicide of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash, who left behind a 24-page note accusing his wife and her family of harassment and extortion. Subhash detailed how he and his family were subjected to false legal cases, ultimately driving him to take his life.

In his note, Subhash wrote, “The more I work hard and become better at my work, the more I and my family will be harassed and extorted…Now, with me gone, there won’t be any money and there won’t be any reason to harass my old parents and my brother.”

Following Subhash’s death, his wife, Nikita Singhania, along with her mother and brother, were arrested and placed in judicial custody.

The death of Puneet Khurana highlights the emotional toll of marital disputes and business conflicts, sparking discussions about mental health and the need for support systems in such challenging circumstances. Investigations into both cases continue as authorities seek justice and answers.
