UCC in Gujarat soon? Five-member panel formed under former SC Judge Ranjana Desai

In a historic decision, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has announced the formation of a five-member committee to draft a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for the state. The committee is chaired by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, and it has been given 45 days to submit its report, based on which the state government will take an appropriate decision.

Gujarat’s commitment to UCC and equal rights

Speaking at a press conference alongside Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, CM Patel reaffirmed Gujarat’s commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ensuring equal legal rights for all citizens. The move aligns with the Central government’s broader plan to introduce a nationwide Uniform Civil Code.

UCC: A step towards legal uniformity

On the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution, PM Modi emphasized the necessity of a Common Civil Code, ensuring uniform legal rights for all citizens, regardless of religion or community. CM Patel reaffirmed Gujarat’s commitment to this initiative, stating that the government will take all necessary steps to implement the UCC once the committee submits its recommendations.
