Canada reeling under massive food crisis

In a stark reflection of Canada‘s deepening economic crisis, a new report reveals that 25% of parents in the country are reducing their own food intake to ensure their children have enough to eat.

The unsettling finding is part of a broader survey by the Salvation Army, shedding light on the severe financial struggles that Canadian households are grappling with, amid rising shelter costs, job insecurity, and inflation.

Released on November 21, the report paints a grim picture, with over 90% of those surveyed saying they’ve had to scale back on grocery shopping in order to prioritize other financial obligations. It’s an unsettling reality that seems to be tightening its grip on families across Canada

Meanwhile, as the situation worsens, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce measures such as a Goods and Services Tax (GST) break on essential items, as a desperate attempt to address the rising cost of living.

The crisis is hitting families hard, with many forced to make impossible decisions between paying bills and putting food on the table. Even food banks are feeling the strain, some reportedly turning away international students, including those from India, due to overwhelming demand.

While the country prepares for a general election next year, Canadians are left wondering how they will navigate this affordability crisis. According to a CBC report, the challenges are particularly severe for parents, who are facing “a disproportionate number of difficulties” related to the soaring cost of groceries.

John Murray, a spokesperson for the Salvation Army, didn’t mince words: “The reality is that many Canadians continue to have trouble meeting their daily basic needs for themselves and, much more importantly, for their children and their family members. And that, for us as an organization, signals a deep, deep crisis for us in the country.”

With 24% of surveyed parents admitting to cutting back on their own food consumption to make sure their kids are fed, it’s clear that the financial strain is reaching unbearable levels. To stretch their budgets further, 90% of respondents said they had reduced grocery spending to make room for other pressing financial needs. But even this comes with its own trade-offs: 84% reported skipping meals, while many families are turning to cheaper, less nutritious options just to get by.

As the crisis intensifies, many are left wondering how Canadians are managing to survive without making even further sacrifices.
