Sanjay Roy found guilty of raping and murdering Kolkata’s RG Kar doctor

A local court in Kolkata on Saturday convicted Sanjay Roy, the prime accused, in the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Additional District and Sessions Court in Sealdah is set to announce Roy’s sentence on Monday.

Case details and investigation

Sanjay Roy, who was working as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police at the hospital, was arrested on August 10, 2024, a day after the body of the 31-year-old doctor was discovered in the seminar room of the emergency building. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the investigation, filed a chargesheet in October 2024 naming Roy as the sole accused.

Despite early speculation about the involvement of multiple perpetrators, the CBI ruled out a larger conspiracy in its charge sheet. However, this has not quelled suspicions among the victim’s family and others who believe additional accomplices may have been involved.

Supreme Court intervention

The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the case in August 2024 following widespread protests across India. The apex court questioned the West Bengal police over delays in filing the First Information Report (FIR), releasing the victim’s body, and their failure to protect medical staff during a mob attack at the hospital.

Family’s reaction

The victim’s parents expressed disappointment with the investigation, claiming others were involved in the crime. “Sanjay Roy’s conviction is one step closer to justice, but we will not rest until all accomplices are held accountable,” the victim’s father stated.

The victim’s mother also voiced similar concerns, asserting that Roy did not act alone. The family vowed to continue their fight for a comprehensive investigation into the case.

Political response

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari welcomed the court’s verdict but echoed the victim’s family’s concerns about a larger conspiracy. Adhikari called for further investigations into allegations involving the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, and former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. “The allegations of a bigger conspiracy must be addressed to ensure justice,” Adhikari said.

Broader impact

The heinous crime at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital shocked the nation and triggered mass protests. It also highlighted significant lapses in security and law enforcement at state-run institutions.

The upcoming sentencing on Monday will be a pivotal moment in the case, but the lingering questions about potential accomplices and systemic failures ensure the fight for justice continues.
