KIIT University closes campus for Nepali students amid rising tensions

More than 500 Nepali students at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar were asked to vacate the campus following widespread protests over the alleged suicide of a Nepali female student on February 16.

In response to the escalating unrest, the university issued a notice stating, “The University is closed until further notice for all the International students from Nepal.” Students were instructed to immediately leave the campus.

Students left stranded at railway station

Reports indicate that the evicted students were transported to Cuttack Railway Station, nearly 30 km from the university. Many students, including female students, were left stranded, as some did not have tickets for their journey home.

Suicide and protests

The incident began when a third-year B.Tech student from Nepal Prakriti Lamsal, was found dead in her hostel room on February 16, reportedly due to suicide. Initial investigations suggest that she may have taken the extreme step due to a strained relationship with a male student from the university.

Following the tragic incident, irate Nepali students staged protests, demanding the arrest of the male student, alleging his involvement in abetting the suicide.

Police investigation and university response

Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Pinak Mishra confirmed that police received a complaint regarding the student’s death and immediately intervened to control the agitated crowd. Authorities have seized the deceased student’s mobile phone and laptop as part of the investigation.

The KIIT University administration later issued a statement confirming that the alleged boyfriend had been detained for questioning.

“It is believed that the student may have taken this step following a personal dispute or issue between them,” said a clarification from the Director of Public Relations of KIIT.

The situation remains tense, with police and university authorities closely monitoring developments.
