Protests against Atishi’s celebration amid AAP’s electoral setback

Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal strongly criticized outgoing former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi after she was seen celebrating her victory from the Kalkaji constituency despite the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) facing a significant defeat against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Delhi Assembly elections.

Ms. Maliwal, once a close associate of Arvind Kejriwal, took to social media platform X to express her discontent, calling Atishi’s celebrations a “shameless display.” She shared a video of Atishi dancing with AAP supporters and remarked, “The party lost, all the big leaders lost, and Atishi Marlena is celebrating like this?

Atishi secures Kalkaji seat despite AAP’s decline

Atishi retained her Kalkaji seat for the second consecutive time, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by a margin of 3,521 votes. She secured 52,154 votes, while Bidhuri received 48,633. Congress candidate Alka Lamba finished third with 4,392 votes.

Despite Atishi’s individual victory, AAP suffered a major electoral setback, with its seat count in the 70-member Delhi Assembly dropping from 62 to just 22. The BJP, on the other hand, secured 48 seats, marking a historic win in the national capital after nearly three decades. The Congress failed to win a single seat for the third consecutive election.

Swati Maliwal’s criticism of Arvind Kejriwal

Swati Maliwal, who has become one of AAP’s most vocal critics, also blamed Arvind Kejriwal for the party’s poor performance, accusing him of arrogance and lack of internal democracy.

Swati stated, “If a person becomes extremely arrogant and stops working for the people, then people teach them a lesson. That is exactly what has happened with Arvind Kejriwal today. Many of us contributed to the party with a vision to transform Delhi, but unfortunately, we could not achieve that because of our leadership. Kejriwal does not believe in internal democracy; he thinks he can get away with anything, including lies and violence.

Allegations against Kejriwal’s aide

Maliwal also reiterated her past allegations against Bibhav Kumar, a close aide of Kejriwal. In May 2024, she accused Kumar of physically assaulting her at the Chief Minister’s official residence. She claimed that during a visit to discuss critical issues, she was “badly beaten” in the drawing room while Kejriwal was present in the house.

As AAP grapples with its electoral loss and internal conflicts, the party’s future leadership and direction remain uncertain.
