PM Modi marks 14th address in foreign Parliament with the speech in Guyana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address a special session of Guyana’s Parliament on Thursday, following his receipt of the country’s highest civilian award, The Order of Excellence. This marks another significant achievement in his ongoing global outreach, as he continues to strengthen India’s diplomatic relations worldwide.

This address will be the 14th time Prime Minister Modi has spoken on behalf of India in a foreign Parliament, setting a record as the Indian Prime Minister with the highest number of such addresses. This accomplishment doubles the number of foreign parliamentary addresses by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who addressed seven foreign legislatures during his tenure.

Notably, previous Indian Prime Ministers have made fewer addresses to foreign Parliaments. Indira Gandhi addressed foreign legislatures four times, while Jawaharlal Nehru spoke on three occasions. Rajiv Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee each delivered two such addresses, and leaders like Morarji Desai and P V Narasimha Rao made just one address each.

Prime Minister Modi’s speeches have spanned across multiple continents, demonstrating India’s growing global influence. His international addresses include appearances in Parliaments across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Australia, and Asia.

Among his notable speeches, PM Modi addressed the US Congress twice, first in 2016 and again in 2023. His global engagements also include speeches to the Parliaments of Australia and Fiji in 2014, the British Parliament in 2015, and the National Assembly of Mauritius and the Parliament of Uganda in Africa in 2015 and 2018, respectively.

In Asia, PM Modi has delivered significant speeches in the Parliaments of Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Afghanistan, and the Maldives. These addresses reflect his strong diplomatic efforts and commitment to strengthening India’s relationships with nations around the world.

As he prepares to address the Guyanese Parliament, Prime Minister Modi’s global engagement underscores his leadership in promoting India’s vision on the world stage.
