Russia launches New Year drone strike on Kyiv

Russia launched a devastating drone strike on Kyiv early Wednesday, January 1, killing one person, wounding six others, and causing significant damage to buildings in two districts, according to city officials.

Details of the strike

Explosions rang out across the morning sky as Ukraine’s air force warned of incoming drones. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that air defenses were actively engaged in repelling the attack.

• A residential building sustained heavy damage, with two floors partially destroyed.
• The body of a woman was later recovered from the debris, according to the city’s military administration.
• Firefighters worked to extinguish fires and assist elderly victims from the damaged building, as shown in photos shared by the State Emergency Service.

In addition to the residential damage:

• The National Bank of Ukraine reported damage to one of its buildings caused by drone debris.
• A non-residential building in another neighborhood was also hit by falling debris, Klitschko said.

Ukraine’s response

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating, “Even on New Year’s Eve, Russia was only concerned about how to hurt Ukraine.”

Kyiv’s military reported shooting down 63 of the 111 drones launched by Russia overnight, with an additional 46 neutralized by electronic jamming.

This latest attack is part of Russia’s ongoing air strikes on Ukrainian towns and cities, including areas far from the front lines. The invasion, which began nearly three years ago, has been marked by repeated assaults on civilian infrastructure and populated areas.
