Trump renews proposal to make Canada the 51st state

Hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, US President-elect Donald Trump reignited his controversial proposal to integrate Canada as the 51st state of the United States.

Trudeau resigns amid party pressure

  • Justin Trudeau, 53, announced his resignation on Monday after mounting pressure from his ruling Liberal Party due to his declining popularity.
  • Trudeau stated he would remain as prime minister until the party selects a new leader, with general elections scheduled for later this year.

Trump’s proposal for Canada

Donald Trump, 78, who had a fraught relationship with Trudeau during his first presidential term (2017–2021), has long floated the idea of merging Canada with the United States. Following his electoral victory on November 5, Trump raised the notion during a meeting with Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago and has since reiterated it multiple times on his social media platform, Truth Social.

In a post responding to Trudeau’s resignation, Trump wrote:
Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned.”

Promises of security and economic relief

Trump further elaborated on his proposal, emphasizing economic and security benefits:
“If Canada merged with the US, there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”

Canadian response and trade threats

Canadian officials have remained largely silent on Trump’s proposal. However, Trump has also issued warnings to Canada, threatening to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports if the country fails to curb illicit drug trafficking and illegal migration across the US-Canada border.

Mockery and controversy

Trump’s social media posts have not been without controversy, as he referred to Trudeau as the “Governor of the Great State of Canada” in one of his messages, further fueling debates about the feasibility and appropriateness of his suggestion.
