5 Indian fishermen injured in Sri Lankan Navy firing

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned the acting high commissioner of Sri Lanka in New Delhi on Tuesday to lodge a strong protest after an incident of firing by the Sri Lankan Navy left five Indian fishermen injured near Delft Island. Among the injured, two sustained serious wounds and are being treated at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, while three others suffered minor injuries, according to a report.

The MEA expressed deep concern, stating that the use of force was “unacceptable under any circumstances.” It emphasized the need to address issues related to fishermen in a “humane and humanitarian manner,” considering their livelihood concerns. Existing agreements between the two countries on such matters must be strictly adhered to, the ministry said.

Details of the incident

The firing incident occurred during the Sri Lankan Navy’s apprehension of 13 Indian fishermen near Delft Island. Of the 13 fishermen onboard, two were seriously injured, prompting immediate medical attention. Indian consulate officials in Jaffna visited the injured at the hospital, providing assistance to them and their families.

Diplomatic action

The Sri Lankan acting high commissioner was summoned to the MEA, where a strong protest was lodged. Simultaneously, the Indian high commission in Colombo raised the issue with the Sri Lankan foreign ministry, seeking accountability and adherence to agreements that prohibit the use of force in handling fishermen-related incidents.

Broader context

This incident underscores ongoing tensions between Indian fishermen and the Sri Lankan Navy over contested fishing rights in the Palk Strait. Arrests, detentions, and incidents of violence have become a recurring issue, prompting diplomatic interventions by the Indian Central and Tamil Nadu governments.

Recently, 41 Indian fishermen detained by the Sri Lankan Navy were repatriated to Chennai. Among them were 35 fishermen from Ramanathapuram district, arrested on September 8, 2024, near Katchatheevu for alleged cross-border fishing. Their release followed efforts by the Central and Tamil Nadu governments.

In January 2025, 15 Indian fishermen detained in 2024 were also released and returned to Chennai. This group included eight fishermen arrested near Mannar Island on September 27, and 12 from Nagapattinam district detained on November 11.

The MEA’s strong response reflects India’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens and addressing ongoing disputes over fishing rights diplomatically and humanely. Both countries are urged to engage in constructive dialogue to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of fishermen.
