Billionaire steps back after escalating feud with President Trump over spending bill and Epstein claims

Days after a public fallout with US President Donald Trump, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has expressed regret over some of his recent posts criticizing the president.

I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X, signaling a possible de-escalation of tensions.

Conflict sparked by spending bill criticism

The conflict originated after Musk harshly criticized the Trump administration’s proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a major piece of domestic legislation. Musk described the bill as a “disgusting abomination” and called for political retribution against Republican lawmakers who supported it.

President Trump responded swiftly. In an interview with NBC News, he warned Musk of “very serious consequences” if he followed through with threats to fund primary challengers against GOP lawmakers. “I have no intention of speaking to him,” Trump said, shutting down any talk of reconciliation.

Just a week earlier, Trump had praised Musk’s service as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a now-dissolved advisory body focused on federal cost-cutting. Musk resigned from the role over disagreements on spending priorities.

Musk’s Epstein allegation and retraction

The feud intensified when Musk posted explosive, unverified claims that President Trump was mentioned in unreleased documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, the financier accused of running a sex trafficking ring before his death in 2019.

Time to drop the really big bomb: (Trump) is in the Epstein files,” Musk posted, insinuating a cover-up involving the current administration. He offered no evidence to support the accusation. In a subsequent message, Musk wrote, “The truth will come out,” before deleting both posts on Saturday morning without explanation.

Trump dismissed the claims as “old news,” stating, “Even Epstein’s lawyer said I had nothing to do with it.” While Trump has acknowledged knowing Epstein socially, he has denied any illegal involvement, and publicly available documents do not implicate him.

Signs of de-escalation

Despite the heated exchange, signs of a possible thaw emerged on June 10. When asked if he would speak with Musk, President Trump said, “I haven’t really thought about it. I just wish him well, very well actually.”

In response, Musk posted a heart emoji on X, suggesting the hostility may be cooling, at least temporarily.

Tensions rooted in policy disputes

The public fallout was fueled by Musk’s outspoken criticism of Trump’s flagship bill, which he called “outrageous, pork-filled,” urging Republicans to block it. Trump fired back by threatening federal contracts tied to Musk’s companies, including the removal of SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft from NASA missions.
