Major success for security forces after 10 Maoists killed in Sukma encounter; weapons recovered

In a significant operation, at least 10 Maoists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh, early this morning. The clash took place in the forested region of Bhandarpadar during a search operation aimed at locating Naxal militants.

According to Inspector General P Sundarraj of Bastar, the operation is ongoing, and all 10 bodies of the slain Maoists have been recovered.

The security forces also seized several weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, an INSAS rifle, and a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), among others.

This encounter marks a notable development in the ongoing efforts to combat Naxal insurgency in the region. The security forces, who have been actively engaged in clearing out Naxal strongholds, are continuing their search in the area.

The encounter in Sukma is part of the broader trend of intensified security operations against Maoist insurgents in Chhattisgarh.

So far in 2024, over 250 Naxals have been killed in various encounters, with 861 arrests and 789 surrenders reported.

The death toll from Naxal violence has significantly dropped over the years, from a high of 1,005 in 2010 to 96 by September 2024. This marks a substantial decrease in violence, with the number of deaths falling by 90%.

In a statement earlier this year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating Naxalism from Chhattisgarh by 2026, with the security forces conducting coordinated operations across the region to achieve this goal.
