US-British coalition launches airstrike on Yemen’s Hodeidah

The Houthi rebel group has announced that US and British fighter jets conducted two airstrikes on the key port city of Hodeidah on Yemen’s Red Sea coast. The attacks reportedly targeted the Bajil district in Hodeidah province, although no immediate details on casualties or the extent of damage were provided.

In a televised address aired on al-Masirah TV, Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi claimed that the group now has full control over maritime navigation in the Red Sea, preventing Israeli vessels from passing through the region.

Al-Houthi stated, “During this period, there is no longer any movement of Israeli navigation,” asserting that not only Israeli ships but also vessels carrying goods bound for Israel have been blocked from transiting the waters.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have launched a series of missile and drone strikes on what they describe as “Israeli-linked” ships, expanding their attacks beyond the Red Sea to targets in Israel.

Houthis actions are part of their broader effort to express solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which intensified after the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

In response to the growing Houthi offensive, the US-British naval coalition, which has had a presence in the region for several years, has conducted regular airstrikes and missile attacks on Houthi positions to deter their maritime operations.
