Crackdown on illegal Rohingyas, electricity, water supply snapped

After shifting more than 200 illegal immigrants from Myanmar (Rohingya refugees) to a makeshift holding center in Hiranagar in March 2021, the Union Territory administration in Jammu and Kashmir has launched another major crackdown against them by disconnecting power and water supply lines to their illegal settlements in different parts of Jammu.

In addition, the police authorities have also booked all those facilitators who have rented out temporary structures to these illegal immigrants from Myanmar and accommodated them for several years on their plots in lieu of money.

The stringent step was aimed at curbing the illegal influx of Rohingya refugees and to ensure public safety.

In the ongoing exercise, the intelligence agencies have also identified some of the Kashmir-based NGOs and others who have been sheltering these illegal immigrants and have deployed a small army of volunteers to facilitate their peaceful lives.

A large number of these illegal immigrants have also married off their young daughters to some residents in Jammu and Kashmir and have been living without any scrutiny.

According to official sources, more than 400 Rohingya families have been deprived of power and water supply in the recent crackdown.

Rohingyas on ground zero claimed their landlords had directed them to vacate the temporary structures after police booked them on charges of facilitating/ sheltering illegal immigrants on their vacant plots in Narwal Bala and Saunjwan area of Jammu.

According to a previous report of the Home Department, more than 6000 Rohingyas were camping across 39 locations in the Jammu region. In addition to Jammu, these illegal immigrants have been staying in Samba, Kathua, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Rajouri, and Poonch districts as well.

Last week, the Jammu and Kashmir police registered cases against their sympathizers for renting out their properties without submitting their relevant records and completing due verification.

In the ongoing process, the Jammu Police has identified several instances and likewise registered cases against landlords who have knowingly or unknowingly rented their properties to Rohingya refugees, who are undocumented and pose a potential security threat.

The police action followed an order by the office of the District Commissioner of Jammu making police verification of tenants mandatory for all property owners in the district.

According to a police spokesman, the Jammu and Kashmir police have so far registered FIR 182/2024 and FIR 184/2024, both under section 223 of BNS in the Police Station Nowabad against Farman Ali S/o Gulam Mohd, R/o Bhawani Nagar, Talab Tillo Jammu; and Azam Malik S/o Masood Malik, R/o Ashti Mohalla, Batmalo, Srinagar respectively. In addition three cases, FIR 296/2024, FIR 297/2024, and FIR 298/2024, all under Section 223 of BNS have also been registered in the Police Station Bahu Fort against Asima Latief D/o Abdul Latief R/o Rehima Abad, Bathindi; Mohd Shakeel S/o Rahim Ali R/o Rehima Abad, Bathindi; and Zakir Hussain S/o Khurshed Ali R/o Dungian, Bathindi, respectively.

Role of Kashmir-based NGOs under the scanner

Meanwhile, during investigations the intelligence agencies have also detected the connivance of some of the few Kashmir-based NGOs who have deployed their young volunteers in Jammu to look after the basic needs of these illegal immigrants.

These volunteers also run makeshift study centers where they provide elementary education to young kids besides helping these illegal immigrants by taking admission in the government-run educational institutions. These volunteers also distribute aid relief to needy families and also arrange medical care services for needy immigrants.

Official sources also claimed they have identified some Kashmir-based NGOs that facilitated the illegal migration of Myanmarese from different parts of the country to the Jammu region to help them settle here with twin purposes including rehabilitation of the illegal immigrants and changing the demographic profile of Jammu.
