Army vehicle falls into gorge in J&K’s Bandipora

At least three soldiers lost their lives, and two others sustained injuries after an Indian Army vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge near the Wular Viewpoint in Jammu and Kashmir‘s Bandipora district on Saturday.

Accident details and immediate response

The Indian Army’s Chinar Corps attributed the accident to inclement weather and poor visibility. According to their statement, the injured soldiers were promptly evacuated for medical care with the assistance of local residents.

“Injured soldiers were promptly evacuated for medical care with assistance from Kashmiri locals, for which we express gratitude towards the citizens in providing immediate succor,” the Chinar Corps posted on X.

“Tragically, three Bravehearts lost their lives in the unfortunate accident. The Indian Army extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” the statement added.

Medical updates

Dr. Masarat Iqbal Wani, Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Bandipora, confirmed that five soldiers were brought to the facility. Of these, two were already deceased, while the remaining three were in critical condition. The critically injured soldiers were later referred to Srinagar for advanced medical care.

Similar incident in Poonch

This incident follows another tragic accident earlier in the week, where five soldiers died, and five others, including the driver, were critically injured after an Army vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a rivulet along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district. That vehicle was part of a six-vehicle convoy traveling through the area.

Authorities ruled out any terrorist involvement in both incidents.

Weather challenges in Kashmir

The region has been grappling with severe cold wave conditions, with dense fog engulfing parts of Kashmir on Saturday. The Meteorological (MeT) Department has warned of heavy snowfall in the middle and higher reaches of the valley, issuing a ‘yellow alert’ for Saturday and an ‘orange alert’ for Sunday.

Officials have cautioned that adverse weather conditions could disrupt surface and air transportation, especially on Sunday. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.
