Trump proposes US taking ownership of Gaza Strip, cites economic development plans

US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States could take control of the Gaza Strip and deploy American troops if necessary. The statement was made during a joint press briefing with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

US plans for Gaza: A long-term strategy?

In a bilateral meeting with Netanyahu, Trump suggested that a US takeover of Gaza could be a “long-term ownership position” intended to bring stability to the Middle East. He stated that such a move would help dismantle threats and create opportunities for development.

“We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site,” Trump declared during the press conference.

Rebuilding Gaza through economic development

Trump outlined a vision to reconstruct Gaza, emphasizing large-scale development.

“Level the site, get rid of the destroyed buildings, and create economic development that will provide unlimited jobs and housing for the people in the area,” he said. “Do a real job, do something different.”

Earlier, during an Oval Office meeting, Trump remarked that many displaced residents might not return to Gaza due to the devastation.

Netanyahu’s response: A ‘worthwhile’ proposal

Netanyahu responded positively, calling Trump’s Gaza takeover proposal “worthwhile” to consider.

“He envisions a different future for that piece of land, which has been a focal point for terrorism, attacks against us, and numerous struggles,” Netanyahu stated.

Hopes for a lasting ceasefire and peace

Trump also expressed optimism that the current ceasefire could pave the way for a more enduring peace in the region.

“I’m hopeful that this ceasefire could be the beginning of a larger and more enduring peace that will end the bloodshed once and for all,” he said.

US withdraws from UN Human Rights Council and UNRWA

In a separate announcement, Trump confirmed that the United States was withdrawing from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and ending support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which has faced criticism for alleged ties to Hamas.

“The UNHRC is anti-Semitic, and UNRWA has been disloyal to humanity,” Trump declared.

Trump’s tough stance on Iran

Reaffirming his administration’s hardline position on Iran, Trump announced new sanctions aimed at cutting Iran’s oil exports to zero.

“We will enforce the most aggressive sanctions, cutting off Iran’s ability to fund terror throughout the region,” he said.

Trump’s perspective on Gaza’s future

When asked about the future of Gaza’s residents, Trump suggested that returning may not be in their best interest.

“Gaza has been very unlucky for them. They live like they’re in hell,” he stated. “The only reason they want to go back is that they have no alternative.”

He reiterated his belief that US involvement in Gaza would bring stability.

“I see a long-term ownership position, and I see it bringing great stability to the Middle East,” Trump told reporters.

He concluded by emphasizing that the decision was carefully considered.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing it, and creating thousands of jobs,” he said.
