Bengaluru’s future depends on proper planning and infrastructure: D K Shivakumar

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar emphasized the importance of proper planning and execution for Bengaluru’s development, stating that failing to plan for roads, pavements, and green zones would be a disservice to the city. “Bengaluru can’t be changed in two-three years. Even God can’t do that. It can be changed only when proper planning is done and executed well,” Mr Shivakumar said.

Speaking at a workshop on road construction organized by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Shivakumar acknowledged that transforming Bengaluru cannot happen in two to three years, even with divine intervention. He stressed that comprehensive planning and consistent execution are essential for long-term improvements.

The handbook on roads released during the workshop provides guidelines for planting saplings, erecting poles, designing main and smaller roads, maintaining traffic discipline, and constructing bus stands. We aim for uniformity and standardization in public infrastructure,” he stated.

Shivakumar also directed BBMP to remove all overhead cables and either lay them underground or eliminate them. Additionally, he announced that the government is developing new policies to safeguard public assets, which will be unveiled in the last week of February.

Addressing tunnel projects, he acknowledged delays due to technical, financial, and land acquisition challenges, which have prevented the government from inviting tenders.

Praising the Constitution for shaping citizens’ lives, Shivakumar highlighted the importance of the newly released handbook on roads, which he believes will guide Bengaluru’s future development. He also mentioned initiatives like beautifying metro pillars with cultural symbols, which have already been implemented in some areas.

Encouraging public participation, he noted that students and youth are increasingly contributing ideas to help shape Bengaluru’s future.

In response to concerns about the diminishing use of Kannada in Bengaluru, Shivakumar reassured the public that Kannada remains prominent. “I proposed the 60:40 ratio for Kannada name boards, and we will take action against any violations of this rule,” he asserted.

With comprehensive planning, standardized infrastructure, and public engagement, the Karnataka government aims to create a more sustainable and well-connected Bengaluru.
