Tamil Nadu CM urges states to resist Centre’s delimitation proposal

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has reached out to several chief ministers, urging them to form a Joint Action Committee (JAC) to strategize against the upcoming delimitation exercise proposed by the Union government. In letters addressed to leaders from South Indian states, West Bengal, Odisha, and Punjab, Stalin emphasized that the move threatens federalism and states’ rights.

Stalin described the delimitation as a direct assault on federalism, arguing that it unfairly penalizes states that have successfully implemented population control measures. He called on affected states to unite in resisting what he termed a “democratic injustice.”

Stalin’s two key requests to states

In his letter, Stalin outlined two key requests:

Formal Consent – He sought the support of chief ministers from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, West Bengal, Odisha, and Punjab to oppose delimitation.
Nomination of Representatives – He urged states to appoint senior party representatives to the JAC, which will coordinate a unified strategy against the Centre’s plan.

As part of this initiative, Stalin proposed an inaugural meeting on March 22 in Chennai to discuss collective action and a roadmap to counter the delimitation process.

Opposition to ‘pro-rata’ delimitation and population-based seat redistribution

In a separate post on X, Stalin challenged Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s justification of the delimitation process on a “pro-rata basis.” He dismissed the argument as “empty rhetoric” and reaffirmed that delimitation unfairly reduces parliamentary representation for states that have effectively controlled population growth.

This is not just about governance—it is about our states’ ability to secure rightful resources, influence policies on education and healthcare, and ensure our economic priorities are addressed,” Stalin wrote.

Broad political outreach across party lines

Stalin has extended invitations to leaders from multiple parties across the affected states, including CPI(M), BJP, Congress, AAP, TDP, YSRCP, BJD, and Akali Dal. He urged them to send senior representatives to deliberate on a unified strategy.

He emphasized that this is not about political rivalry but about protecting the democratic rights of states and their people.

“Let us stand together not as separate political entities but as protectors of our people’s future,” Stalin urged in his letter.

Rallying support on social media

Stalin took to social media to amplify his opposition, stating:

The Union government’s plan for #Delimitation is a blatant assault on federalism, punishing states that ensured population control & good governance by stripping away our rightful voice in Parliament. We will not allow this democratic injustice!

With growing opposition to the delimitation exercise, the coming weeks are expected to see intensified political discussions and coordinated action against the Centre’s plan.
