Nagpur violence mastermind Fahim Shamim Khan arrested

Nagpur Police on Wednesday arrested Fahim Shamim Khan, a local leader of the Minorities Democratic Party (MDP), for allegedly orchestrating communal violence in the city on March 17. The clashes left several people injured.

Khan’s arrest came just hours after his name was officially included in an FIR registered at Ganeshpeth Police Station. Earlier, police released his photograph, and a video surfaced allegedly showing him delivering a provocative speech moments before the violence erupted.

The 38-year-old MDP leader, a resident of Sanjay Bagh Colony in Yashodhara Nagar, has been remanded to police custody until March 21.

Khan’s role in the violence

According to senior police officials, preliminary investigations and video evidence suggest that Khan’s speech directly incited tensions, leading to clashes between communities.

Fahim Khan previously contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from the Nagpur constituency as an MDP candidate, running against senior BJP leader and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. However, he lost by over 6.5 lakh votes.

Background: Communal clashes in Nagpur

Violence broke out in Nagpur’s Chitnis Park area on March 17, following rumors of the desecration of a community’s holy book during a right-wing protest demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The situation quickly escalated, with mobs pelting stones at police, leaving 34 personnel injured.

Following the incident, a complaint was filed against the protesters, accusing them of hurting religious sentiments. Based on this, an FIR was registered, though no arrests have been made so far.

Current security measures in Nagpur

Authorities have stated that the law and order situation is under control, though a curfew remains in effect in several sensitive areas. A senior official confirmed that over 2,000 armed police personnel have been deployed to maintain security.
