Indian Armed Forces excel Pakistan, but leadership struggles with Kashmir policy

The Indian Armed Forces sounded a trouncing of Pakistani positions with military sophistication, professionalism, with added strength, in their recent conflict with Pakistan. The Indian Armed Forces outperformed Pakistani forces with tactical brilliance and command of the field, receiving admiration for their military prowess and battlefield command.

Yet the country’s moment of glory was quickly diluted by a string of diplomatic blunders, with foreign policy analysts berating the leadership for letting foreigners interfere and hasty agreement to a ceasefire, even as India clearly had the strategic upper hand.

Battlefield glory, strategic blunder

From surgical interventions to front-line supremacy, Indian forces carried out operations with singular efficiency. Momentum favoured India, not merely because of the topography, but also in the form of morale and operational predominance.

However, in an unexpected twist, the Indian government accepted an early ceasefire, which was said to be under compulsion from world powers, including most notably the US President Donald Trump, who freely volunteered to “mediate” on the Kashmir problem. The act, viewed as a diplomatic howler by most, unwittingly legitimized Pakistan’s longstanding move to globalize the Kashmir issue.

Unfinished business in Pahalgam and POK

Major goals, such as the capture or elimination of 4–5 terrorists believed to have perpetrated the gruesome Pahalgam massacre, were left unfinished. Similarly, the chance to reclaim, advance into Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK), a longstanding strategic and emotional concern for India, was given up in favour of a ceasefire.

Experts contend that this window will not open again anytime soon.

We were on the threshold of changing the balance of the region, militarily and politically,” a retired army official said. “But the brakes were applied at the wrong moment, not by the forces, but by the leadership.”

Pakistan gains ground in global optics

Though losing on the ground, Pakistan successfully attained its most important diplomatic objective, making the Kashmir question an international issue. By positioning itself as a stakeholder under foreign pressure and mediation negotiations, Islamabad converted defeat into opportunity, realizing international involvement in an issue India has perpetually considered a strictly bilateral matter.

Analysts say this change undermines India’s longstanding position and confers Pakistan a narrative edge it had been denied for so long.

Foreign policy under scrutiny

India’s “erratic and reactive handling of foreign affairs” has been blamed by critics for the loss of steam. Strategic voices within India have demanded an assertive, self-sufficient foreign policy that does not succumb to external pressure at pivotal moments.

“Diplomatic muscle must equal military might,” insisted a former diplomat. “We cannot win wars on the battlefield and lose them in global conference rooms.”

The road ahead: Strategy, not sentiment

As much as the courage and ingenuity of the Indian Armed Forces cannot be questioned, this episode has caused a wider debate on national strategy. Can there be continuation of military successes without diplomatic unity? Can India risk giving foreign leaders a seat at the table on questions of fundamental sovereignty?

These are questions that the government now needs to respond to, in action, not words.
