NC’s subversive resolutions
Now that the NC has said what it said through its subversive resolutions, it’s time for PM Modi to act and further break the backbone of Kashmir Jihad

Mr PM Modi, it’s the right time to make Jammu a state and Kashmir a Chandigarh-type UT

Three-time Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and his son and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and their personal outfit, Kashmir-based National Conference (NC), which was founded by Sheikh Abdullah during the reign of Maharaja Hari Singh to achieve political emancipation from Jammu province/ Dogra rule and establish an independent Muslim Kashmir, will not reform themselves. They are religiously committed to pursue the line they pursued all through that created an unbridgeable gulf between Kashmiri Muslims and the rest of the countrymen; that created an Islamic Republic of J&K within the Indian Republic; that cleansed Kashmir of over 99 percent original inhabitants of the Land of Vitasta, Kashmiri Hindus, almost all the Jammu Dogras and thousands of Punjabis in January 1990; that caused irreparable damage to Jammu province and the Trans-Himalayan Ladakh region; that sought to force down the throats of the Hindus of Jammu and Buddhists of Ladakh their regressive, repressive, oppressive, primitive and intolerant ideology under the garb of secularism, the Congress and the Left-style; and that rendered the non-Muslims of Jammu and Ladakh unreal and ineffective for all practical purposes. Their Kashmir and one community-centric misrule also had led to the separation of Ladakh from Kashmir on August 5, 2019 and massive movements in Jammu in 1952-53 (Ek Nissan, Ek Vidhan, Ek Pradhan movement), 1967-68 (students movement), 1976-1977 (movement against Indira-Sheikh Accord 1975), 1981-1983 (movements for new districts), 1987 (Darbar Move movement), 1998 (movement for due share in technical and professional colleges and establishment of Mata Vaishno Devi and Agricultural universities), 2008 (Amarnath land movement) and 2010-11 (movement for establishment of Central University of Jammu).

The worst part of the whole situation was the fullest possible, unflinching, and unqualified support the Abdullahs got from the anti-state elements in the South and North Blocks. Many of them had contemptuously dismissed some of these highly successful movements as “communal” and “anti-Kashmiri Muslims” and opined in a most brazen manner that such movements in Jammu had the potential of further alienating Kashmiri Muslims. So much such so, even the country’s apex court had in 1987 went beyond the confines of the preamble of the constitution to deny the Hindu-Sikh refugees from the then West Pakistan citizenship rights available to the people of J&K. And, this, notwithstanding the fact that they all, like L K Advani, Manmohan Singh, N N Vohra, Kuldip Nayyar, Rajinder Sachhar, to mention only a few, were hereditary Indians and they had been languishing in different parts of Jammu province since their migration in 1947-48.

That the Abdullahs and their outfit are religiously committed to tread the path they treaded before August 5, 2019, when the Narendra Modi government sprung a pleasant surprise by abrogating the state’s special status and bifurcating the erstwhile state into Union Territory of J&K and Union Territory of Ladakh, rattled secularists of all varieties across the nation and upset the applecart of the aggressors Pakistan and China, could be seen from four of the seven resolutions the working committee of the NC “unanimously” passed on May 21 at its Srinagar-based headquarters.

What did these resolutions say?

Resolution 2 said: “The Working Committee unanimously reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the restoration of J&K’s special status. The committee reiterated that this is central to the aspirations and dignity of the people (read Muslims) and must be addressed without further delay, and we will continue to fight for its restoration.”

Resolution 3 read like this: “The working committee urges the Government of India to restore full statehood to J&K immediately as promised on the floor of Parliament and repeatedly echoed in the public domain and also as committed by the constitution bench of the Supreme Court.”

Resolution 4 urged the Narendra Modi government to start a result-oriented dialogue process with Pakistan aimed at finding a solution to the so-called Kashmir issue and restoring peace and normality in the region.

The resolution said: “The working committee welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire and called upon both countries (India and Pakistan) to uphold peace and explore long-lasting, peaceful solutions to end violence.”

Resolution 6 expressed the NC’s solidarity with those booked under the charge of anti-state and terror-related activities and sought their release from jails located within J&K and outside.

The resolution read like this: “It cautions that arbitrary arrests, harassment of youth, targeted use of bulldozers, and intimidation of legitimate media voices will only alienate the very people who have stood firmly for peace and against violence.”

All these four resolutions should clear all the cobwebs of confusion and establish that their battle-cry and watchword continues to be the pernicious two-nation theory. The resolutions further established that they want limited accession of J&K with India; that they want a preferential treatment for J&K just because the Muslim population constitutes nearly 60 percent of the region’s population. The short point is that there is hardly any difference between Jinnah’s Muslim League and Abdullahs’ NC.

Reactions

It was expected that the NC’s resolutions would spark a row not only in Jammu and Delhi but also in Srinagar. It did happen. In Delhi, the BJP’s national general secretary and in-charge J&K unit of the BJP, Tarun Chug, lambasted the NC and the Abdullahs and condemned their “divisive politics.”

“At a time when the NC, led by Omar Abdullah, should have stood shoulder to shoulder with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the massacre of innocent tourists in Pahalgam, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is playing escapist politics…Nowhere in the party resolution is a word of appreciation for Operation Sindoor. Moreover, the cross-border terrorism sponsored by Pakistan’s ISI finds no mention…Nowhere has the NC blamed Pakistan’s ISI for triggering the crisis. Omar Abdullah should have come forth to condemn the killing of innocent tourists at the hands of Pakistan-sponsored terrorists…That terror and talks cannot go together should have been highlighted by Omar Abdullah,” Chug, among other things, said in a statement.

In Jammu, Senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the J&K Assembly, Sunil Sharma, tore into the NC and accused it of willfully ignoring what he called the “monumental success of Operation Sindoor.” “It is disappointing that in all the seven resolutions passed by the NC, there is not a single word of recognition or appreciation for the Indian forces who put their lives at risk for the unity and integrity of the nation…The bravery of our forces is unmatched. Their dedication to safeguarding the sovereignty of India deserves nothing but the highest honour and recognition,” said Sunil Sharma.

He, like Tarun Chug, also slammed the NC for passing a resolution advocating Indo-Pak talks. The NC had no locus standi in the matter as it was “beyond the scope” of a state party, he said. “Matters related to international diplomacy fall strictly within the ambit of the Union government and the Ministry of External Affairs. By making such suggestions, the NC is overstepping its constitutional boundaries and confusing the people with unrealistic expectations,” he, in fact, said on May 21 itself.

Not just this, he also expressed his strong disapproval of the NC’s continued insistence on special status and Articles 370 and 35A.

“The Supreme Court of India has already delivered a decisive judgment on the issue, upholding the constitutional validity of their abrogation. Talking about Article 370 now is nothing but a futile exercise. It’s part of history and has no place in contemporary political discourse. The NC is only trying to keep people in the dark by repeatedly raising this irrelevant issue,” he said while taking on the NC leadership.

Sunil Sharma also took the opportunity to tell the NC leadership that its demand seeking restoration of statehood was “untimely” and “politically motivated.”

Two days later, he again talked about the NC’s demand for statehood, and this time in Kashmir. “The restoration of J&K’s statehood is the prerogative of the Parliament and the BJP, and not of regional parties like the NC or the PDP. Statehood will come. We will bring it. Not at the request of NC or PDP, but when the time is right, through Parliament and through PM Modi…The NC is unfamiliar outside J&K…The party has only two members in Parliament. In a crowd of 543, they’re not even visible. We are ruling in more than 20 states. They cannot be compared to us,” he, inter alia, said in the Karnah sector near the LoC.

The PDD of Mehbooba Mufti, which had been consistently advocating the line the NC advocated on May 21 through its resolutions, also pounced upon the Abdullahs and their party. Its youth wing chief and MLA, Waheed Para, in fact, denounced and taunted the NC at the same time. “So, the NC, armed with a brute mandate of 50 MLAs, passed a resolution on special status and statehood – not in the J&K Assembly, where such matters belong, but in its party office, Nawai-i-Subh. Let that sink in…What’s next? A cabinet meeting in the party office?,” said Para.

Now that the NC has said what it said through its subversive resolutions, it’s time for PM Narendra Modi to act and further break the backbone of Kashmir Jihad. And, there is but one way in which the backbone of Kashmir Jihad can be further broken and that is by granting state status to the under-threat and grossly discriminated against Jammu and making Kashmir a Chandigarh-type Union Territory. The sooner it is don, the better for the nation.
