PM Modi to visit Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana for strategic diplomacy and G20 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant three-nation visit to Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana from November 16 to 21. This diplomatic tour comes at the invitation of the respective leaders of these countries and aims to strengthen India’s international partnerships in key areas of trade, energy, defence, and development cooperation.

The Prime Minister’s first stop will be Nigeria, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the West African nation in 17 years. PM Modi will arrive in Abuja on Saturday for a two-day visit, where he will engage in high-level talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The discussions are expected to focus on reviewing and enhancing the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria, with particular emphasis on economic ties, energy collaboration, and defence cooperation. India and Nigeria have been strategic partners since 2007, with over 200 Indian companies having invested more than USD 27 billion in the country. Modi will also address the Indian community in Nigeria during his visit.

Following his visit to Nigeria, PM Modi will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the G20 Summit on November 18. Brazil is hosting this year’s summit, and India, along with Brazil and South Africa, forms part of the G20 Troika.

As part of his participation in the summit, the Prime Minister will advocate India’s positions on various global issues and continue the work done in previous G20 meetings, including those hosted by India. On the sidelines of the summit, Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders to discuss key issues affecting global peace, security, and prosperity.

After the G20 Summit, PM Modi will visit Guyana, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American nation since 1968. From November 19 to 21, Modi will meet with Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and other senior government officials to discuss strengthening bilateral ties. Modi is also scheduled to address the Guyanese Parliament and engage with the Indian diaspora in the country. His visit follows President Ali’s 2023 visit to India, where he attended the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.

A key highlight of the Guyana leg of the visit will be PM Modi’s participation in the Second CARICOM-India Summit, where he will engage with leaders from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to deepen India’s historical and growing ties with the region.

This tour reflects India’s increasing engagement with Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, as it looks to expand its diplomatic and economic footprint across diverse global regions.
