The tussle between Uddhav Thackeray and Devendra Fadnavis continues

Uddhav Thackeray’s recent statement— “Batenge katenge fatenge is okay, but if you look at Mumbai, hum aapko katenge”—is nothing short of a disgraceful and dangerous piece of political rhetoric. In a bid to assert dominance in the ongoing political tussle in Maharashtra, Thackeray has resorted to intimidation and divisive language that has no place in a democratic discourse.

On the last day of campaign, while speaking at a rally, Thackeray said, “मी देवेंद्र फडणवीसांना आणि सगळ्यांना सांगतोय की तुमचं बटेंगे फटेंगे सोडा पण मुंबई वरती घाला घातला तर हम आपको काटेंगे, जरूर काटेंगे.”

“I am telling Devendra Fadnavis and everyone else, leave your batenge fatenge, but if you attack Mumbai, we will cut you, we will cut you for sure.”

By suggesting, “hum aapko katenge” (we will cut you down), Thackeray’s words not only reflect a complete lack of respect for political opposition but also undermine the dignity of public dialogue.

Such a threat coming from a political leader is deeply concerning and sets a dangerous precedent for political discourse. When a figure of Thackeray’s stature resorts to language that incites fear and aggression, it undermines the very foundations of democratic engagement. Political leaders are meant to lead by example, advocating for unity, tolerance, and dialogue, not fostering an environment of intimidation and hostility.

The idea that political disagreements should be settled through threats rather than reasoned debate is utterly unacceptable. In a state that prides itself on its progressive outlook, such remarks have no place and only serve to promote an atmosphere of hostility and fear.

It is deeply troubling when political leaders resort to this kind of incendiary language, which plays into the hands of those who thrive on creating conflict rather than fostering collaboration. Mumbai, which has long been a melting pot of ideas, cultures, and political ideologies, deserves leaders who will protect its unity and not divide it further with threats and intimidation. Thackeray’s remarks may have been aimed at his political rivals within the Shiv Sena faction or the broader opposition, but they undermine the very spirit of democracy—where differences are meant to be settled through dialogue, not threats.

The people of Mumbai, and Maharashtra as a whole, deserve leadership that upholds the values of respect, tolerance, and constructive debate, not one that encourages an atmosphere of fear and aggression.

Uddhav Thackeray’s statement is a stark reminder that political discourse in India must rise above such petty threats. Leaders must be held accountable for their words and actions, especially when they have the potential to incite violence and disrupt public order.
