EAM Jaishankar meets Chinese FM Yi; discusses India-China ties

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro on Monday, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. The meeting focused on the next steps in their diplomatic relationship following recent talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which led to a breakthrough in easing border tensions.

Jaishankar and Wang Yi discussed the progress made in the disengagement of troops along the India-China border, which has been a longstanding issue since violent clashes in 2020.

“We noted the progress in the recent disengagement in the India-China border areas,” Jaishankar wrote in a post on X, adding that the two diplomats “exchanged views on the next steps in our bilateral ties.”

The meeting between Jaishankar and Wang Yi comes after last month’s high-level discussions in Kazan, Russia, where Prime Minister Modi and President Xi reached a consensus to de-escalate border tensions and move towards normalizing relations.

Jaishankar highlighted the progress made on the ground, noting that the implementation of the 21st October agreement had proceeded as planned, leading to a reduction in tensions between the two countries.

Lin said, “China stands ready to work with India to deliver on the important common understandings between the two countries’ leaders, step up communication and cooperation, and enhance strategic mutual trust.”

Jaishankar said, “Our leaders have directed the foreign ministers and the special representatives to meet at an early date. Some progress and some discussions have happened in that direction.”

“The leaders have directed the foreign ministers and special representatives to meet at an early date, and some progress has already been made in that direction,” Jaishankar said after he met with Wang Yi. He also noted that both sides were keen on improving communication and cooperation.

While both Jaishankar and Wang Yi engaged in fruitful discussions, there were no indications that Prime Minister Modi and President Xi would meet during the ongoing G20 Summit. Lin Jian, in his briefing, mentioned that he did not have any information regarding a potential bilateral meeting between the two leaders at the summit.
