Huge setback for MVA, Nana Patole resigns as Maharashtra Congress chief

Nana Patole has reportedly tendered his resignation as the Maharashtra Congress President following the party’s poor performance in the recently concluded State Assembly elections. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), led by Congress, suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which secured 235 seats and 49.6% of the vote share.

In contrast, the MVA only managed to win 49 seats with a mere 35.3% of the votes.

The Congress faced a significant drubbing in the Maharashtra elections, winning just 16 out of the 103 seats it contested.

Sources close to Patole confirmed that he resigned in the wake of the party’s electoral setback but was unable to meet with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday. As of now, the resignation has not been accepted by the party high command.

Patole, who ran from the Sakoli constituency, won by the slimmest of margins—only 208 votes—compared to his victory in 2019 when he secured the seat by a comfortable margin of nearly 8,000 votes. His win this year ranks among the top three in terms of the smallest margins across the state.

While Congress struggled, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the dominant force, winning 132 seats. However, the opposition has raised concerns over potential irregularities, with accusations of electronic voting machine (EVM) manipulation.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, along with several other opposition leaders, expressed shock at the outcome, particularly given the NDA’s inability to address major issues during the campaign.

Thackeray also questioned how the MVA’s earlier strong performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where it significantly dented the BJP’s prospects, could have been reversed so drastically in just four months.

He called the result “surprising” and criticized the NDA’s dominance in the state despite not having any significant achievements to boast of.
