PM Modi’s sharp critique of opposition ahead of parliament’s winter session

Ahead of the four-week Winter Session of Parliament set to begin on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp critique of the Opposition, accusing certain members of resorting to “hooliganism” after facing rejection from the electorate.

In a pointed remark that referenced the Congress party‘s recent defeat in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Prime Minister called on the public to continue rejecting opposition parties. He stressed that opposition leaders should respect the sentiments of the people and honor the democratic process.

“The public has to reject them again and again,” Modi said, emphasizing that democracy requires leaders to work tirelessly to meet the hopes and expectations of the people. He further added that while some opposition members act responsibly and want the Parliament to function smoothly, others, who have been repeatedly rejected by voters, fail to honor the democratic will and disrespect their colleagues.

Modi’s comments come as the Opposition has been vocal in its criticism of the government, often raising concerns about various policies and governance issues. The Prime Minister, however, urged Parliament members to uphold dignity and respect while conducting the nation’s business.

The PM also pointed out that India’s global reputation depends on how effectively Parliament operates and how its members conduct themselves.

In his remarks, Modi specifically mentioned the success of the BJP in the recent Assembly elections and bypolls, particularly in Maharashtra, attributing the results to the continued strength of the public mandate witnessed during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He stressed that these electoral victories have further bolstered the BJP’s position and reflected the people’s confidence in the party.

With Parliament’s Winter Session set to begin, the focus will be on important legislative matters, but it remains to be seen how the Opposition will respond to the Prime Minister’s statements, which have already set the tone for what is expected to be a contentious session.
