INS Arighaat flexes ‘nuclear muscles’ with successful ‘K-4 missile’ test

India has successfully conducted a test of its nuclear-capable K-4 or Kalam-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) from the newly commissioned nuclear-powered submarine INS Arighaat.

The test, which took place on Wednesday morning off the coast of Visakhapatnam in the Bay of Bengal, marks a significant milestone in India’s Naval capabilities.

This test is the first time the K-4 missile has been launched from an operational submarine, as prior tests had been conducted using submersible pontoons.

The K-4 missile, a solid-fueled missile with a strike range of 3,500 km, was launched from the 6,000-tonne INS Arighaat. While the test has not been officially confirmed, sources close to the matter told the Times of India that the launch was part of a routine exercise.

The missile test was conducted as part of India’s broader efforts to bolster its strategic defence posture. Sources confirmed that the results of the test would be thoroughly analyzed to ensure that the missile met its intended parameters. The missile launch followed a public notice from India regarding an intermediate-range missile test scheduled between November 27 and 30 in the Bay of Bengal.

INS Arighaat, commissioned on August 29, is the second nuclear-powered submarine in India’s fleet and significantly enhances the country’s nuclear deterrence.

The submarine is designed to carry nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles, classified as SSBNs (Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear), which serve as a crucial component of India’s nuclear triad.

The K-4 missile test from INS Arighaat is also indicative of India’s ongoing expansion of its nuclear submarine fleet. The country is preparing to induct its third SSBN, INS Aridhaman, which is set to join the fleet in early 2025.
