Class-12 student detained for bomb threats linked to NGO with political party ties: Delhi Police

The Delhi Police revealed on Tuesday that a Class-12 student, detained for allegedly sending bomb threats to over 400 schools in the city, has ties to an NGO that supports a political party. The NGO has previously expressed support for Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, intensifying the political debate ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections.

Police investigation highlights

Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Madhup Tewari, shared details of the investigation during a press conference, stating that the emails were traced despite challenges posed by the use of a virtual private network (VPN). “The VPN use made it difficult to trace the origin of the emails and hindered service providers from assisting effectively,” Tewari said.

The police seized the juvenile’s laptop and mobile phone for forensic analysis after identifying him as the sender of over 400 threatening emails. Investigations revealed that the minor’s father worked for an NGO affiliated with a civil society group that supported Afzal Guru’s clemency and backed a political party.

BJP criticizes AAP over alleged NGO links

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) targeted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) following the Delhi Police’s findings. During a press conference, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi alleged that the AAP has “deep bonds” with NGOs opposing Guru’s execution.

“All of us know that AAP has deep ties with such NGOs. In February 2015, ‘tukde-tukde’ slogans were raised on Afzal Guru’s death anniversary, and the AAP delayed action on related files for months,” Trivedi said.

He also accused Delhi Chief Minister Atishi’s parents of supporting Guru’s clemency petition, raising questions about AAP’s alleged connection to the NGO. “I demand Arvind Kejriwal to clarify the AAP’s relations with these people. If juveniles are involved, what kind of influence are these NGOs exerting on children?” Trivedi added.

Election context

The revelations and accusations come as Delhi prepares for its Assembly elections, scheduled for February 5, with vote counting on February 8. The BJP’s allegations against the AAP add a new dimension to the heated political environment.

The matter remains under investigation, with the Delhi Police continuing to examine the NGO’s role and its political affiliations.
