Release all Indians serving in the Russian military, says India after one more death

India on Tuesday called on Russia to release all Indian nationals serving in its military following the death of another Indian citizen on the frontlines of the Ukraine conflict, bringing the total number of Indian fatalities in the war to 10.

Indian citizen killed, another injured in Ukraine

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the death of Binil Babu (31), a resident of Kuttanellur in Kerala’s Thrissur district, during combat in Ukraine. Another Indian national from Kerala was injured and is currently receiving treatment in a Moscow hospital. Details regarding the circumstances of the death were not disclosed.

India seeks release of Indians serving in Russian military

India has repeatedly pressed Russia to release all Indian nationals recruited as support staff, including cooks and helpers, in its military units. Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin during two meetings last year, following the deaths of at least nine Indian nationals in the conflict.

“We have learnt of the unfortunate death of an Indian national from Kerala who had apparently been recruited to serve in the Russian army,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. “Another Indian national from Kerala, who was similarly recruited, has been injured.”

Jaiswal stated that the matter was “strongly taken up” with Russian authorities and the Russian embassy in New Delhi. He reiterated India’s demand for the early discharge and repatriation of the remaining Indian nationals serving with Russian military units.

Support for families and repatriation efforts

The MEA assured that efforts are underway to transport the mortal remains of the deceased back to India. It also expressed condolences to the bereaved family and confirmed that the Indian embassy in Moscow is providing assistance to the families of citizens serving with the Russian military.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by India in ensuring the safety and well-being of its nationals involved in conflicts abroad.
