Canada announces tariffs on US imports

Canada is set to impose a 25% tariff on a wide range of US-produced goods, including alcohol, household appliances, tools, firearms, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and clothing. The decision was announced by Canada’s Finance Minister, Dominic LeBlanc, who on Sunday released a detailed list of affected American products. These retaliatory tariffs will take effect on February 4, 2025.

Background: US tariffs on Canada and Mexico

The move comes in response to President Donald Trump’s imposition of a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods, along with an additional 10% tariff on certain imports from China. In retaliation, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced during a Saturday night press conference that Canada would introduce countermeasures targeting $155 billion worth of American goods. Trudeau encouraged Canadians to support domestic products, emphasizing that Trump’s trade policies would ultimately cause economic harm across North America.

Notably, Canada is the largest export market for 36 US states, while Mexico remains the United States’ largest trading partner.

List of US products facing 25% Canadian tariffs

According to the official list released by Canada’s Finance Ministry, the following products are among those affected by the new tariffs:

Agricultural and food products

• Poultry meat and offal: Fresh, chilled, or frozen.
• Live poultry: Including chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and guinea fowls.
• Milk and cream: Not concentrated and without added sugar or sweeteners.
• Yogurt: Containing chocolate, spices, coffee extracts, cereals, or bakery ingredients, provided they do not replace essential milk components.
• Fresh or chilled tomatoes.
• Other nuts: Fresh or dried, shelled or unshelled.
• Tea: Flavored and non-flavored varieties.
• Cane or beet sugar: Including chemically pure sucrose in solid form.
• Natural honey.
• Unroasted coffee: Not decaffeinated.
• Cumin seeds: Crushed or ground.

Alcoholic beverages

• Sparkling wine: Alcoholic strength not exceeding 22.9%.
• Other wines and grapes must: In containers holding 2 liters or less.

This list represents only a portion of the complete list of tariffed items, as released by the Canadian government. Additional US goods across various sectors are also affected by these new trade restrictions.
