Vance’s second international trip as VP, Usha Vance’s first visit as Second Lady

US Vice President J D Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance are set to visit India later this month, marking Vance’s second international trip since assuming office. His first visit was to France and Germany in February, where he delivered a controversial speech at the Munich Security Conference, criticizing European governments for stifling free speech, overturning elections, and failing to manage illegal immigration.

This will be Usha Vance’s first visit to India as the Second Lady. Her parents originally immigrated from India to the US.

Visit comes amid US-India trade dispute

The visit comes at a time of growing trade tensions between India and the US, following President Donald Trump’s claims that India has agreed to cut tariffs on American imports. Trump credited his administration’s pressure on India for what he termed as a long-overdue correction of unfair trade practices.

“India is finally cutting tariffs because somebody is exposing them,” Trump asserted, just days after announcing reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods, set to take effect on April 2.

However, India has denied making any such commitments. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal clarified to a Parliamentary panel that no trade deal has been finalized, and negotiations are still ongoing.

On Tuesday, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada reaffirmed that discussions with the US were focused on enhancing market access, reducing import duties, and addressing non-tariff barriers to strengthen supply chain integration.

Political reactions in India

Trump’s comments have stirred political debate in India, with opposition parties questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government over its handling of trade negotiations with the US. The Congress party accused the Modi administration of yielding to US pressure, demanding clarity on India’s trade position.

Previous engagement between J D Vance and PM Modi

JD Vance last met PM Narendra Modi at the Paris AI Action Summit, ahead of Modi’s high-profile visit to the US. During their interaction, Vance praised the Indian Prime Minister, calling him “gracious and kind.”

As a gesture of goodwill, PM Modi presented Vance’s children—two sons and a daughter—with heritage-inspired gifts during their meeting.

With trade discussions heating up, the upcoming visit by the US Vice President is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of India-US relations in both economic and diplomatic spheres.
