Boulder terror attack: Man shouting “Free Palestine” injures six in targeted attack using improvised flamethrower

A peaceful pro-Israel gathering in downtown Boulder, Colorado, turned violent on Sunday when a man threw Molotov cocktails at demonstrators, injuring at least six people. The FBI is investigating the incident as a targeted terrorist attack.

The suspect, identified as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, reportedly used a makeshift flamethrower and shouted “Free Palestine” before launching the incendiary assault on members of ‘Run For Their Lives,’ a group raising awareness for Israeli hostages held in Gaza. The incident took place on Pearl Street Mall, a popular pedestrian area.

Attack details and immediate response

Boulder police responded to reports of individuals being “set on fire” around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of 13th and Pearl streets. Multiple victims, ranging in age from 67 to 88, suffered varying degrees of burns. Some remain in serious condition.

A video captured by a bystander documented the chaos as attendees screamed that Molotov cocktails were being thrown. Armed officers and K9 units evacuated and secured multiple blocks of the downtown area.

Soliman, who was also injured during the incident, was taken into custody at the scene and hospitalized. Authorities said he acted alone and are not seeking other suspects. Though charges have not yet been formally announced, officials emphasized that Soliman will be “held fully accountable.”

Authorities label it an act of terror

FBI Special Agent Mark Michalek confirmed the attack is being investigated as a terrorist act motivated by ideology. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said the attack represents a rising trend of “ideologically motivated violence” in the US.

This act of terror is being investigated based on early information, the evidence, and witness accounts,” Bongino said.

FBI Director Kash Patel called the incident a “targeted terror attack,” and said that agents are working closely with local police.

Victims and eyewitness accounts

Lynn Segal, 72, a participant in the rally, described the terrifying moment:

A rope of fire shot in front of me, then two big flares. People were burning,” she recalled. Despite wearing a pro-Palestine shirt, Segal said she feared being mistaken for an accomplice.

The victims had just concluded a weekly demonstration calling for the release of the remaining Israeli hostages captured by Hamas during the October 7, 2023, attack, in which around 1,200 Israelis were killed and 250 hostages taken. As of now, 58 hostages remain in Gaza, with about one-third believed to be alive.

Context and political reactions

The Boulder attack comes amid heightened global tensions over the Israel-Hamas war. A week prior, two Israeli embassy staffers were shot dead in Washington by a man reportedly yelling similar pro-Palestine slogans.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis condemned the attack, stating:

Hate-filled acts of any kind are unacceptable. My thoughts go out to those injured. The state is working with federal law enforcement to fully investigate this heinous act of terror.”

The US Department of Justice echoed these sentiments, referencing a concerning pattern of attacks against Jewish Americans nationwide.

Social media and early identification

Before official confirmation, the suspect’s identity was shared widely on social media by prominent accounts including Raws Alerts and political commentator Laura Loomer.

Officials have reiterated that while the motive is still under investigation, early evidence suggests ideological extremism played a role.
