‘Mohammad is travelling with bombs‘: Mumbai Airport receives fresh bomb threat

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport was the target of a bomb threat on Wednesday afternoon when an unidentified caller warned of a plot to blow up the airport. The threat was made to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) control room, with the caller specifically naming an individual, “Mohammad,” who was allegedly carrying explosives on a flight bound for Azerbaijan.

Upon receiving the alarming call, CISF immediately alerted the Sahar Police, leading to a rapid security response. A thorough security sweep of the airport was launched, and additional measures were put in place to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.

Authorities conducted extensive checks across airport terminals and flights, but no explosives were found during the search.

This incident is part of a broader uptick in bomb threat calls to airports and airlines, which have raised significant concerns about the safety of air travel. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken a proactive role in addressing these threats, particularly in light of a surge in hoax calls.

In October alone, more than 450 such calls were reported across the country, prompting authorities to tighten security measures nationwide.

In response to the growing number of fake threats, the NIA’s cyber wing has launched a detailed investigation into the origins of these calls, particularly those believed to be linked to foreign sources.

The investigation aims to identify the motivations behind these hoax threats and assess whether they pose any real security risks.

In light of the increasing frequency of bomb threats, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a stern advisory to social media platforms in October. The advisory instructs platforms to comply with the Information Technology (IT) Rules and the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) by taking swift action to remove bomb threat-related posts. Platforms that fail to “promptly” remove such content could face legal consequences and be held accountable for spreading such threats.
