Victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi have expressed their gratitude towards the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi after receiving appointment letters from Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on Friday. The job letters were handed out to about 50 individuals who had long been waiting for employment as part of a rehabilitation initiative for the riot-affected families.

On Thursday, L-G Saxena visited Tilak Vihar, a colony in West Delhi built for the victims, where he distributed the appointment letters. The move was hailed as a significant step toward securing the future of the victims and their children.

Deepak Sethi, a resident who received a job letter, expressed immense relief. “The future of our children seems secure now. The previous governments had halted our progress. We have been demanding jobs since 2006, and finally, 50 people received appointment letters yesterday,” he said.

Harvinder Singh, another recipient, echoed Sethi’s sentiments, noting that the process had started in 2006 but had been stalled for years. “There is a lot of relief now. The future of the children is secure,” Singh added.

Atma Singh Lubana, Vice-President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), who has been actively advocating for the victims, said that another 500-600 individuals are expected to receive job appointments soon. These are the remaining files that are still under review.

The Lieutenant Governor has directed the Divisional Commissioner and Chief Secretary to set up a camp next week to verify the remaining files and ensure all eligible 1984 riot victims receive their job letters. Those who have not yet been appointed are expected to be given employment in the coming days.

Lubana further criticized the previous Congress government, which he claimed had selectively shortlisted people for jobs in 2006 but failed to deliver. He explained that some victims were rejected due to illiteracy, while others were denied opportunities based on old age. “The Lieutenant Governor has removed all such conditions,” Lubana said.

Reflecting on the changes under the current government, Lubana pointed out that after the formation of PM Modi’s administration, justice has been more forthcoming. He mentioned that Sajjan Kumar, a key figure in the riots, was sentenced to prison, and a charge sheet was filed against another prime accused, Congress leader Jagdish Tytler.

Lubana also expressed gratitude to the central government, BJP President J P Nadda, and Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva for securing jobs for the 1984 riot victims.
