Suspense over Maharashtra CM continues

The political suspense surrounding the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra continues as the three key leaders of the MahaYuti allianceDevendra Fadnavis of the BJP, Eknath Shinde of Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar of the NCP — are set to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Thursday.

Following the MahaYuti’s impressive victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections on November 23, which saw the alliance win 230 out of 288 seats, speculation has been rife over who will take the helm of the state. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 132 seats, its highest-ever tally, while Shiv Sena secured 57 seats and NCP 41.

However, despite the resounding victory, the alliance has still not given confirmation on the Chief Minister’s post.

Ajit Pawar, speaking to reporters, suggested that the new Chief Minister could be sworn in on either November 30 or December 1. He also confirmed that two deputy Chief Ministers would be appointed in the new government, representing the three major constituents of the Mahayuti alliance.

On Wednesday, BJP leader Vinod Tawde met with Amit Shah for nearly 40 minutes, reportedly discussing the details of the government formation process.

Eknath Shinde, who resigned as Chief Minister on Tuesday but continues in a caretaker capacity, addressed the media, stating that he has left the final decision on the CM post to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP leadership. “I have told PM Modi that I would not be an obstacle. We will go with whatever he decides,” Shinde affirmed, adding that he had assured full support to the BJP in forming the new government.

Shinde’s comments came in response to growing demands within his Shiv Sena faction for him to continue as Chief Minister, especially after the Mahayuti alliance’s landslide victory under his leadership. However, Shinde denied any personal dissatisfaction over the possibility of not securing a second term. “Nobody is annoyed. We have worked as MahaYuti,” he asserted.

In the run-up to the meeting in Delhi, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, leader of the RPI (A) and a BJP ally, expressed his support for Fadnavis as the next Chief Minister but reiterated that the final decision would rest with the BJP’s high command.

As the suspense continues, all eyes are on the outcome of Thursday’s meeting in Delhi, which is expected to finalize the leadership of Maharashtra’s new government.
