Sukhbir Badal gets toilet cleaning duty from Akal Takht

The Akal Takht, the highest temporal authority in Sikhism, has instructed former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to undertake cleaning duties at a Gurdwara as penance for his role in the 2015 sacrilege case involving the Guru Granth Sahib.

Penance for supporting Dera chief

The directive comes in response to Badal’s support of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim during the sacrilege incident. Additionally, the late Parkash Singh Badal, a former Punjab Chief Minister, and Sukhbir Badal’s father, has been stripped of the honorary title of Fakhr-e-Qaum (Pride of the Community).

Clergy meeting and decision

The decision followed a meeting led by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, alongside Sikh clergy, to address critical Panthic issues, including matters related to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Sukhbir Badal and other SAD leaders holding cabinet positions in 2015 have been asked to fulfill their penance on December 3.

Cleaning duties and langar service

Badal, who is currently wheelchair-bound, will clean the Gurdwara bathrooms from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., accompanied by Akali Dal’s core committee members. Afterward, they will bathe and participate in serving langar, as reported by NDTV.

The directive follows Sukhbir Badal’s submission of an unconditional apology to the Akal Takht, in which he acknowledged his past decisions that harmed the Sikh community’s image.

Declared Tankhaiya

On August 30, the Akal Takht officially declared Sukhbir Badal a Tankhaiya (one guilty of religious misconduct), citing his controversial decisions as Punjab’s Deputy Chief Minister and SAD president. The Akal Takht’s unanimous ruling sought accountability for actions that damaged the image of Panthak Swaroop (Sikh representation).
