India’s organic food product exports have surged to $447.73 million in the first eight months of the current fiscal year (FY25), positioning the sector to surpass last year’s export figures.

As of November 25, India had exported a total of 263,050 metric tonnes (MT) of organic food products, Union Minister of Food Processing Industries, Navneet Singh Bittu, informed the Lok Sabha on Monday.

In the previous fiscal year (FY24), the total export value of organic food products stood at $494.80 million, indicating strong growth in the sector.

While the government has not allocated specific funds to incentivize organic food production, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, provides financial assistance to its member exporters, including those dealing with organic products.

The APEDA is also responsible for implementing the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), which includes the accreditation of certification bodies, setting standards for organic production, and promoting organic farming and marketing. India currently has 1,016 organic-certified processing units under the NPOP.

In a significant development for the promotion of Indian organic products, APEDA announced in September a partnership with global retail chain LuLu Group International (LLC) to showcase a wide range of certified Indian organic products in its UAE stores.

This collaboration aims to expand the reach of Indian organic products in international markets, linking Indian organic growers—including Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), and cooperatives—with the LuLu Group.

APEDA remains committed to boosting India’s agro and processed food exports by organizing B2B exhibitions abroad, exploring new markets, and collaborating with Indian embassies to promote natural, organic, and Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged agro-products, the Minister told the House.
