Himachal CM Sukhu sparks controversy after attending public event with ‘wild chicken’ on menu

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu is embroiled in controversy after wild chicken, a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, was reportedly served at a dinner event in Shimla. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from animal rights organizations and political leaders, with calls for an apology and action against those responsible.

Controversy brews over endangered dinner delicacy

The event took place in the remote Kufri area of Shimla, where Sukhu attended a dinner that included wild chicken, bichu booti (a local herb), and bread made from maize and wheat. Although Chief Minister Sukhu did not consume the wild chicken, it was reportedly served to the State Health Minister and other guests, raising concerns over the illegal hunting of the protected species.

Wild chicken, found at altitudes above 3,000 feet in Himachal Pradesh, is legally protected, and hunting it is a punishable offence under the Wildlife Protection Act. The incident gained traction on social media, with animal welfare groups and political figures demanding accountability.

BJP demands a written apology

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been vocal in its criticism, with state spokesperson Chetan Bharta calling for a public apology from Chief Minister Sukhu. Former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur condemned the event, calling it unacceptable and urging the government to take swift action. Thakur pointed out that while the government claims to address people’s grievances through programs like Jan Manch, serving a protected species at an official event was hypocritical and illegal.

As of now, the Himachal Pradesh government and administration have not issued an official statement regarding the matter.
