NIA-ATS probe uncovers train derailment training in madrasas in Jhansi and Kanpur

In a disturbing development, a recent investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has uncovered a conspiracy to derail trains in the Jhansi and Kanpur regions. The probe revealed that students in local madarsas are being radicalized and trained on how to derail trains, with the training taking place both in-person and online.

The authorities discovered several videos during their investigation showing radical Islamists instructing youths on how to place objects on train tracks and incite derailments. The training materials were shared through online platforms, and the authorities have conducted multiple raids at madarsas in the area. One teacher, Mufti Khalid Nadvi, has come under suspicion and is being interrogated in connection with the conspiracy.

On Thursday, when NIA and ATS officials attempted to take Mufti Nadvi for further questioning, a large Muslim mob attacked their convoy and freed him. The mob had been incited by announcements made from a local mosque. Nadvi was later re-arrested and is being questioned, with authorities seizing his laptop, mobile phone, and other items for investigation. He is also suspected of being involved in terrorist activities and receiving foreign funding.

In addition, police have filed a case against around 100 individuals involved in the attack on the NIA-ATS convoy, and raids are underway to apprehend them.

This incident comes amid multiple recent attempts to derail important trains such as the Sabarmati Express and Kalindi Express near Jhansi and Kanpur. Stones were thrown at the ‘Vande Bharat’ train, and various objects like cylinders and wood logs were placed on the tracks. Fortunately, alert railway workers and locals were able to spot the dangers before any incidents occurred.
