Trump loses appeal in E Jean Carroll sexual abuse case

A US Federal Appeals Court has upheld a jury’s decision ordering President-elect Donald Trump to pay $5 million in damages to writer E Jean Carroll for sexual abuse and defamation. The ruling comes as Trump faces ongoing legal challenges even after his re-election to the presidency.

Details of the verdict

The case stems from allegations that Trump sexually abused Carroll at a Manhattan department store in 1996. Following a nine-day civil trial in New York last year, a jury found Trump guilty of sexual abuse, awarding Carroll $2 million in damages, and an additional $3 million for defaming her.

Trump has consistently denied the allegations and appealed the verdict, arguing that the testimony of two other women who accused him of sexual assault should not have been permitted during the trial.

Appeals Court rejects Trump’s claims

On Monday, the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed Trump’s appeal, stating that he failed to prove any significant errors in the original trial that would justify a new one.

“We conclude that Mr. Trump has not demonstrated that the district court erred in any of the challenged rulings,” the three-judge panel wrote. “Further, he has not carried his burden to show that any claimed error or combination of claimed errors affected his substantial rights.”

Separate legal battles

In addition to the $5 million verdict, another jury awarded Carroll $83 million in damages in a separate case against Trump. Trump has also appealed that ruling.

Steven Cheung, a Trump spokesperson, announced plans to appeal the $5 million judgment, reiterating Trump’s claims of political bias.

“The American people have re-elected President Trump with an overwhelming mandate,” Cheung said in a statement. “They demand an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and a swift dismissal of all of the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded Carroll Hoax.”

Other legal challenges

Trump’s legal troubles extend beyond the Carroll case. He was previously convicted in New York of 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. While Judge Juan Merchan recently rejected Trump’s request to overturn the conviction, sentencing has been postponed indefinitely.

Meanwhile, two federal cases brought by special counsel Jack Smith—alleging Trump mishandled classified documents and attempted to overturn the 2020 election—were dismissed following Trump’s presidential election victory, in accordance with Justice Department policy barring the prosecution of a sitting president.

The upholding of the $5 million verdict against Trump marks another chapter in the high-profile legal disputes surrounding the president-elect. Despite these legal challenges, Trump and his team remain adamant in their claims of innocence, vowing to continue their appeals.
