CM Yogi Adityanath advocates unity, calls for reconciliation in religious disputes

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday emphasized the need to avoid referring to controversial structures as mosques, asserting that Islamic principles are against constructing mosque-like structures at disputed sites. Speaking at an event hosted by a private news channel, he addressed the Shahi Jama Masjid dispute in Sambhal, which sparked violence in November last year, according to an official statement.

Islamic principles and disputed structures

Adityanath stated that worship at disputed sites is neither acceptable to God nor aligned with Islamic teachings. He argued, “We must never call a controversial structure a mosque. The day we stop calling it that, people will stop going there. Islam itself teaches against hurting others’ faith or constructing mosques at disputed sites.”

He added that Islam does not mandate specific structures for worship, unlike Sanatan Dharma, where temples are integral to religious practices. “If God disapproves, why should we engage in such futile worship?” he questioned.

Sambhal dispute and historical context

Referring to the Shahi Jama Masjid, Adityanath highlighted Sambhal’s historical significance as the prophesied birthplace of Kalki, the tenth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He cited historical texts, including Ain-i-Akbari, which allegedly document the demolition of a Shri Hari Vishnu Temple in 1526 to construct the Jama Masjid.

Adityanath called for voluntary resolution of disputes over religious sites like the Shahi Jama Masjid, urging followers of Islam to acknowledge historical truths and extend goodwill. “These matters should not require judicial intervention. Reconciliation and mutual respect can resolve such issues,” he stated.

Violence and the Places of Worship Act

The Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal became a flashpoint after a court-ordered survey in November 2024. Violence erupted during a second survey on November 24, resulting in the deaths of four people. Adityanath expressed confidence in the courts to ensure justice while respecting all faiths under the Places of Worship Act.

Vision for a united India

The Chief Minister called for unity and progressive thinking, saying, “This is the time to embrace the vision of a new India.” He reflected on the significance of Ayodhya, expressing gratitude for the installation of Ram Lalla’s idol in 2024, which he described as ending a 500-year-long wait.

Adityanath also discussed the upcoming Maha Kumbh 2025, noting its auspicious timing, and reiterated his slogan, “Ek hain to nek hain, batenge to katenge” (If we are united, we are virtuous; division leads to destruction), emphasizing the importance of unity.

Criticism of opposition and constitutional amendments

The chief minister criticized the opposition I.N.D.I.A bloc, accusing them of hypocrisy. “Those who once strangled the Constitution now hold its copy to mislead the public,” he said. Adityanath also highlighted the inclusion of terms like “secular” and “socialist” during the Emergency, questioning their relevance.

Adityanath reiterated his vision of unity, mutual respect, and historical reconciliation to resolve religious disputes through his remarks. He emphasized learning from past mistakes to ensure peace and progress for a united India.
