China seeks EU support after US imposes 145% tariffs on goods
Xi urges EU to resist US tariffs, says must resist 'unilateral bullying'

Xi Jinping urges unified stance against US tariff actions

In response to the recent US decision to raise tariffs on Chinese imports to 145 percent, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the European Union to align with Beijing in countering what he labeled as “unilateral bullying.” The comments came during a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez as tensions between Washington and Beijing continue to escalate.

Xi stressed the growing importance of China-EU cooperation in maintaining stability in global trade. Speaking to reporters through China’s official news agency Xinhua, he stated, “China and Europe should fulfill their international duties… and jointly oppose unilateral bullying practices.” He added that collective action would not only protect mutual interests but also help preserve global fairness and justice.

Spain acknowledges trade gaps but advocates for stronger ties

Following his discussion with Xi, Prime Minister Sanchez acknowledged that Europe has a sizable trade deficit with China. However, he emphasized that this imbalance should not prevent efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation. “Both Spain and Europe have significant trade deficits with China that need to be addressed,” he said. “But that should not obstruct the opportunity for expanded ties between China and the EU.”

US moves forward with steep tariff hike

Xi’s appeal came shortly after the US confirmed a new round of tariff hikes. President Trump’s administration announced an additional 125 percent tariff on Chinese goods, adding to a prior 20 percent duty introduced earlier this year. The cumulative tariff rate now stands at 145 percent.

President Trump defended the tariffs during a cabinet meeting, stating, “We are committed to ensuring fair treatment for American industries.” US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the move as strategic, warning China not to retaliate. “If Beijing avoids escalation, there will be benefits,” he said.

Beijing responds with its own tariffs, refuses talks

China on Friday announced an increase in tariffs on US goods from 84 percent to 125 percent, shortly after President Trump unveiled a steep hike in duties on Chinese imports, raising them to a staggering 145 percent. However, it also noted that it would not retaliate any further.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi has initiated discussions with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), while Premier Li Qiang has been engaging European leaders. According to Xinhua, Li spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to reinforce diplomatic ties and promote a message of international cooperation.

China seeks broader cooperation with the EU amid trade disputes

Xinhua reported that Li reaffirmed China’s willingness to deepen trade, investment, and industrial collaboration with the EU. “China is prepared to work with the EU to implement prior agreements, expand dialogue, and enhance practical cooperation,” the agency noted.

During meetings with business leaders, Li assured them that China is ready to handle economic uncertainties. “We have fully assessed the situation and will adapt our policies as needed,” he said, signaling a flexible approach in light of ongoing global shifts.
