‘Ambush’ in Manipur’s Jiribam

At least 11 Kuki militants were killed in a fierce gun battle with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Monday in Manipur‘s Jiribam district. The clash occurred after the militants attacked a CRPF camp, injuring two jawans.

One of the injured soldiers is reported to be in critical condition and has been airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

According to police officials in Imphal, the militants launched a pre-dawn assault on the CRPF camp in the Jiribam area. The CRPF troops retaliated, and in the ensuing exchange of fire, 11 Kuki rebels were gunned down. However, the remaining militants managed to escape the area under the cover of dense terrain.

Officials also noted that there was a relief camp nearby for people displaced by ethnic violence, and it is suspected that the militants may have targeted the camp as well. The attack has further intensified tensions in the district, which has been caught in the crossfire of ongoing ethnic strife in Manipur.

The situation in Jiribam remains volatile, with reports of missing civilians following the encounter. It is unclear whether these individuals were abducted by the fleeing militants or were hiding during the gunfight. The bodies of the slain militants were taken to the Borobekra police station for identification, and an investigation is underway.

In response to the rising tensions, Jiribam District Magistrate Krishna Kumar imposed an indefinite curfew in the area to prevent further violence and maintain law and order. The move follows a spate of violent incidents in the region over the past two weeks, exacerbating the already tense atmosphere in the state.

The attack on the CRPF camp is just one in a series of violent incidents in Manipur, which has been wracked by ethnic violence since May of this year. On Sunday, armed attackers from the hills launched a series of bombings and automatic weapon fire in Imphal East district. The security forces, including the army, Border Security Force (BSF), and police, responded with retaliatory fire, resulting in a heavy exchange at Thamnapokpi village. Fortunately, there were no casualties in that attack.

The ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur has also seen the targeting of civilians. On Saturday, a woman from the Meitei community, Sapam Ongbi Sonia Devi, was shot dead by unidentified assailants while she was working in her paddy field in Bishnupur district.

The attack occurred just two days after militants killed another woman, Sangkim, in Jiribam’s Zairon village, where the assailants also set fire to several houses.

Local sources report that Sangkim’s remains were later dismembered by the attackers after her body was consumed by the flames. The brutal assault sent shockwaves through the village, with many residents fleeing to safer areas in fear for their lives.
