Sambhal violence: Mob opposes Jama Masjid survey, turns violent

In a shocking turn of events, a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, spiraled into violent clashes between locals and law enforcement, leaving three dead and over 30 police officers injured. The violence has drawn widespread condemnation for the brazen attack on police personnel, who were simply carrying out their duties in an already tense situation.

The trouble began early on the morning of the survey when a crowd gathered near the mosque in response to the court’s directive. The survey, which sought to examine the mosque’s historical significance amid a contentious legal battle, quickly escalated into chaos as the crowd, which grew to nearly a thousand people, became violent.

Protesters, many of whom opposed the survey, threw stones at the police and attempted to block access to the mosque. In the ensuing clashes, the mob set fire to more than ten vehicles.

Despite the violent nature of the mob, the police were forced to use tear gas and minor force to restore order. However, the mob’s aggression continued to surge, leading to the deaths of three individuals – Naeem, Bilal, and Nauman – and a significant number of injuries among police officers.

Several officers, including the gunner of the Superintendent of Police, were among those hurt in the brutal attack.

Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh confirmed the casualties, saying, “Three people have been killed, and several police personnel, including the gunner of the SP, have been injured.”

Over 30 law enforcement officers were reportedly injured in the incident, with some sustaining severe injuries from stone pelting and mob violence.

The survey, which had been planned for several days, is part of a larger legal battle over claims that the Jama Masjid was built on the site of a destroyed Hindu temple. This claim, rooted in historical texts like the “Baburnama” and “Ain-e-Akbari,” has sparked tensions across the region.

While some view the survey as an important step toward uncovering historical truths, critics argue that it could incite unnecessary religious tensions and violate the Places of Worship Act, which prohibits changing the religious character of any place of worship.

In an official statement, Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Vishnoi confirmed that the police had responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation. “Those involved in the violence will be identified, and strict legal action will be taken,” Vishnoi said, reaffirming the police’s commitment to maintaining law and order.

The violence has already led to the arrest of 15 individuals, including three women, with more likely to follow as investigations continue. Graphic videos of the mob throwing stones at police officers and setting vehicles ablaze have sparked outrage online, drawing widespread condemnation of the attack on law enforcement.

Despite the ongoing unrest, the survey was completed as per the court’s order.

Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, who was part of the survey team, confirmed that the team had completed its examination of the site and recorded the process using videography and photography. The survey report is expected to be submitted to the court by November 29.
