Ajit Pawar has been elected as the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the Maharashtra Assembly, marking a significant moment for the party following its record-breaking performance in the state elections. The NCP, which contested 58 constituencies, won an impressive 41 seats, underscoring the party’s growing influence under Pawar’s leadership.

At his official residence, ‘Devgiri’, in South Mumbai, Ajit Pawar welcomed newly elected legislators and expressed gratitude for their efforts. He also reviewed the party’s performance, acknowledging its overwhelming success in securing the 41 seats.

The election result marks a defining moment for Pawar, who broke away from his uncle, NCP founder Sharad Pawar, in July 2023. Ajit Pawar’s faction has now claimed to be the real NCP, with his strategic leadership positioning the party as a force to be reckoned with in Maharashtra politics.

In his address, he credited the party’s victory to a series of welfare initiatives like the “Ladki Bahin Yojana” and free electricity schemes, which resonated with the electorate.

“The people’s mandate has delivered a clear message, and this government will be 100% stable. The overwhelming support from voters is a testament to the Mahayuti’s strong position,” Pawar said, emphasizing the party’s commitment to delivering on its promises. He also expressed his determination to strengthen the NCP’s presence across the state, with a focus on regaining its national status.

In his speech, Pawar also thanked party legislators and cadres, highlighting the collective effort that propelled the NCP to its historic success. “The teamwork has paid off, and we must continue this spirit in the future. Our victory has placed a heavy responsibility on our shoulders, and we will dedicate ourselves to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Maharashtra,” he said. Pawar vowed that the NCP would focus solely on development and the welfare of the people, steering clear of negative rhetoric against opponents.

Pawar’s ascension to the leadership of the NCP has sparked discussion within the party, with some legislators suggesting that he has the qualities to become Maharashtra’s next Chief Minister. Several posters were seen outside his residence, showing his image alongside the words “Next CM.”

Ajit Pawar is expected to meet with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss government formation and the allocation of key positions, including the Chief Minister’s role.

The trio is also planning to visit Delhi for talks with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Sources indicate that the swearing-in ceremony could take place as soon as Wednesday.
